Inspiration is often found in the most simplest and surprising forms. From a small newspaper article found randomly in 1999, Julia Britton began work on the play Internet Baby about a same-sex couple who adopt a baby over the internet. The play was given its first public reading in 2001 at Carlton's La Mama Theatre with actors Peter Heward, John Tarrant, Kate Gorman, John Morris, Deborah Langley, Penelope Bartlau and Chris Birt before being updated in 2002. Although the reading proved a great success, the play remained idle for years gathering dust.
That is until Fly-On-The-Wall Theatre finally gave it its first full production at the Carlton Courthouse. It was presented by La Mama as part of the Midsumma Festival in 2009 under the new title The Dream Children featuring actors Stefan Taylor, Daryl Ricketts, Emily Nisman, Christopher Pender, Margaret Younger and Marc Opitz. The opening night provoked heated discussion and strong reactions from both critics and audience members alike. This was clearly not a play that was going to lay silent after the third and final week. Robert Chuter, John Morris, and Christopher Pender have joined forces to form the newly established production company Fat Kid Films to produce the film version of The Dream Children.
